Centara was established in 1983, courtesy of Thailand’s leading retail group the Central Group of Companies. The first Centara property was a five-star hotel together with the Bangkok Convention Centre in the expanding suburbs in the northern part of Bangkok. After a few years, that hotel branch was renamed Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok and is now revered as one of Bangkok’s top hotels for MICE facilities. Even at their early operations, Centara already made expansions throughout popular tourist spots in Thailand. They established a series of first class accommodations nationwide which has now amounted to a total of 43 properties, 32 operations, and 11 establishments under construction.
Since Centara experienced a rapid and massive growth in their business, they decided to extend their operations internationally in 2009. Their first hotel outside of the country is the five-star Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives. The hotel achieved fast success so the company made more overseas developments that now span in 63 properties all over Maldives, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Oman, and Qatar. The choice of international properties is based on the popularity of these destinations among Thai travelers. At the end of the day, Centara remains a committed brand to its Thai roots.
