Asuncion: Mother of Cities in Paraguay
Asuncion, Paraguay, is the capital city of Paraguay. The city was named when a stockade was completed there on the Feast of the Assumption (August 15) in 1537. It is over 600 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and one of the oldest cities in the heart of South America. Asunceños use their Spanish with Guaraní, an indigenous language spoken to some degree by the majority of Paraguay’s population. Asunción serves as the major distributing center of populous regions of Paraguay. Sugarcane, tobacco, cotton, fruit and cattle products from the pastoral and rich hinterland are processed in Asuncion. Silvio Petirossi International Airport is barely 10 miles from the city center, but there are reliable public transit options.
Best Time to Visit
Asuncion’s weather is mostly humid, subtropical and has two states: warm and hot. Temperatures usually hover above 86 degrees Fahrenheit from October through to April, which is also wet season, with afternoon rains. The dry season falls between May and September.
