Best Time to Visit
The Canberra Airport was constructed from a previously operational airstrip. It fell under the control of the RAAF in 1939. One year later, the airport was involved in what would be termed the Canberra air disaster. A Lockheed Hudson aircraft preparing to land ended up crashing near the airport, killing its crew and passengers that comprised of government staff. Since then, ownership of the Canberra site fell to the Canberra International Airport Pty Ltd. Before the more modern expansion efforts, the Canberra Airport had two terminals. It was in 2009 that the airport announced its plans to modernize and improve its infrastructure. The new extension constructed were named after David Warren, who invented the blackbox, and this naming was initially proposed by Eve Cogan at only 10 years old. Some cities near Canberra Airport are Barton, Hawker, Gundaroo, Sutton, and Weston Creek.
