Elmina: Ghana’s Historical Town by the Sea
Elmina, Ghana is a small town situated at the south coast of the country. Its old name was Anomansah, which means inexhaustible drink. It was known as the first European settlement in West Africa. Local attractions such as the Java Museum are popular tourist sites.
Best Time to Visit
July is the best month to visit Elmina due to the annual festival being celebrated on the month’s first Tuesday, the Bakatue Festival. The festival can trace is roots as far back as 1847 where it was first reported by the Dutch. What to Do & Area Attractions
Elmina’s long history is one of its charms, attracting several tourists with its well-preserved architecture. Elmina Castle is the city’s most well known attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, it was once named as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina and was once the first trading post built in the Gulf of Guinea, which eventually became an influential trading post for several trades including the Atlantic slave trade. It is also the oldest European-made infrastructure in the Sahara. Not too far from the castle is another attraction, Fort St. Jago. Also referred to as Coenraads Burg or Fort Sao Tiago da Mina, this chapel was built by the Portuguese in honor of St. Jago.
