Diego Jiménez Torres Airport – FAJ
The Diego Jiménez Torres Airport or most locally known as Fajardo Airport, was the Fajardo City’s business airport before November 2008. It is located one mile south of Fajardo City in Puerto Rico and served the city and the nearby towns. The Diego Jiménez Torres Airport, whose airport code is FAJ was an active air taxi airport that served domestic transport and had four airlines taking to and from Fajardo areas. It was only in 2008 when the airport’s operations were shut down and moved to José Aponte de la Torre Airport in Ceiba. In 2015, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced its permanent closure.
Best Time to Visit
FAJ- Diego Jiménez Torres Airport has a total area of 95 acres and elevated 64 feet above sea level. It has a runway with asphalt as its surface, which is marked, closed as of this time. Puerto Rico Ports Authority owned the airport. When the airport was closed, four air taxis were serving it namely, Air Flamenco, Isla Nena Air, M&N Aviation, and Viequez Air Link. As of this time no indication so far for the reopening of the airport. Caimito is one of the barrios near the airport to have beautiful spots.
What to Do & Area Attractions
There are many accommodations around the airport, but the El Conquistador Resort a Waldorf Astoria Hotel offers free airport transportation to their guests and Las Casitas a Waldorf Astoria Resort, and the Fajardo Inn, offers variety of recreational activities and cozy rooms. These hotels are all within 10 to 20 minutes from the airport.
The other airport close to Diego Jiménez Torres Airport is Humacao Airport (HUC).
