Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) is also commonly referred to as North Front Airport and is located in Gibraltar, Gibraltar. The Ministry of Defense owns this airport and is run by the government. This military and civilian airport and is used by the Royal Air Force and civilian operators.
Since Winston Churchill Avenues intersects with the airport’s runway, the road is often closed down whenever an airplane takes off or lands. At the same time, due to strong winds, aircraft landings during winter season are a little bit rough. GIB-Gibraltar was ranked as the world’s 5th most extreme airport by the TV program, “Most Extreme Airports.”

This airport was built during World War II and served as a British naval base. It opened its doors in 1939 but was only used as an airfield for the Royal Navy. Eventually, the runway was extended to accommodate bigger aircraft.
Aside from Gibraltar, GIB also caters to the towns of Marbella, Artola, and Puerto Banus. Gibraltar Airport also serves passengers traveling from neighboring cities of southern Spain including Costa del Sol and Campo de Gibraltar. In 2017, GIB attended to 571,184 passengers passing through GIB Airport. The airlines operating in the airport are British Airways, EasyJet, and Royal Air Maroc Express.
