Goris: A Small Town Amongst Large Mountains
Goris is a town located up in the mountains in Syunik Province, the southernmost province of Armenia. The name “Goris” was derived from the Indo-European words “gor”, meaning, “rock”, and “es” meaning “to be”. Thus Goris referred to “a rocky place”. Goris, Armenia is located near the Varavak River and is surrounded by the Zangezur Mountains. The area is served by the nearby Goris Airport.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Goris, Armenia for ideal weather is either from April to July or from August to October. These periods experience a wide range of temperatures, ranging from cool to moderately warm. To avoid peak season, the best time to visit is either in October or December. One of the annual events to catch in the town is the Mulberry Festival, celebrated every August.

Goris, Armenia is town surrounded stunning natural scenery. One of tourists’ favorite local attractions are the Old Kores, a collection of stone pyramids located a few miles east of the town. Goris is also known for the Medieval Goris Cave Dwellings, a series of cave shelters located along the town’s hillside that were built as far back as the 5th century. They can be accessed through long rope bridges, making seeing the site even more of an adventure. Some of the Goris hotels include Zorats Akhbyur Hotel, with spacious, colorful rooms and outdoor dining areas overlooking the town and the mountains, and Hotel Mirhav, a cozy and intimate lodging with a flower garden and a scenic view of the mountains.
