Liberal: A Small Town Escape to Pancake Day Race’s Home
County seat of Seward County, Kansas, Liberal gained its name out of the city’s kindness - “That’s Very Liberal of You” and was derived from the name of the post office - Liberal, KS, during the late 1800s. One of its well-known early settlers and founders, S.S. Rogers became famous for giving away water to travelers who go through the region. After the railroad was built close to the region, settlement begun and started cultivating the soils in the region. Natural gas was later discovered in the western region of the town and oil on the southwest. By 1963, it became home to the National Helium, the largest helium plant in the world. At present you can reach the region via the LBL-Mid America Regional Airport.
