The Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, also known as Paramaribo-Zanderij International Airport, is the primary airport for commercial air services to Paramaribo. It is located in the town of Sanderij, Paramaribo, Suriname. Its airport code, PBM, stands for the Suriname’s province Paramaribo. Before World War II, the Zanderij Field, location of the airport was a Pan American World Airways stop. When United States joined the 2nd World War in 1941, Zanderij became amajor transport base on the South Atlantic route of Air Transport Command. As of the present, the airport has handled up to 100,000 passengers yearly.

The PBM-Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport has one runway of 3.5 kilometers. The state of Suriname planned to invest $70 million dollar for expansion and modernization of the airport. As of this time, the arrival lounge, commercial center and parking lot have been handed over, the platforms for plane has been renovated, and the runway has been repaved.
