Pemba: The Place to Go for Fun in the Sun
Pemba, Mozambique, is a port city that is on a small peninsula in Pemba Bay, it serves as a gateway to the north. Founded in 1904, Pemba used to go by the name Porto Amelia. Today, Pemba is a city with three different parts: the old town, the busier and more commercial town center and a beach area that is a popular tourist hub. Serving the city is Pemba Airport (POL), a small international airport that connects to 8 different cities in 5 different countries.
Best Time to Visit
Pemba comes alive with tourist activities from May to August, a period when Pemba hotels and flights are more expensive than usual because of the high demand. Happening within the peak season is TAMBO International Art Camp, a week-long festival in July celebrating cultural diversity through art, dance, theater and music performances. This also means that hotels are jam-packed so it’s best to book ahead if you’re interested in participating.
