São José dos Campos is a city and a municipality in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. It is the birthplace of Brazilian aerospace industry, and until nowadays the most important center of aerospace manufacturing and research in the country. Sao Jose dos Campos - Professor Urbano Ernesto Stumpf Airport (SJK) is the airport serving São José dos Campos, Brazil. It is named after Urbano Ernesto Stumpf (1916–1998), colonel-aviator, Aerospace Engineer, professor at several universities and inventor of the motor that runs on ethanol fuel.
Best Time to Visit
SJK Airport was built in the 1950s basically to serve CTA or Comando-Geral de Tecnologia Aeroespacial, the airport originally had only a dirt runway. In the 1970s, the runway was paved with asphalt and lengthened to 3,000 meters. The airport was also equipped to handle instrument landings and an apron that is able to accommodate large cargo aircraft. Sao Jose dos Campos - Professor Urbano Ernesto Stumpf Airport is attended by the International Airport Professor Urbano Ernesto Stumpf. Despite being an international airport, it operates only domestic commercial flights, connecting the city to Campinas, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro. The airport is very close to the main aerospace and research centers (Embraer, CTA, Mectron, INPE) which may be convenient for business visitors. Aruja and Cotia are also served by the SJK.
