Armenia: More Than Just a Colombian Coffee Grower
One of the centers of the national economy, Armenia, Colombia is part of the Colombian coffee growing axis or the coffee triangle. The city was founded by Jesus Maria Ocampo in 1889. The nearest airports include El Eden International Airport, Perales Airport, and La Nubia Airport.
Best Time to Visit
Armenia has the perfect weather during the months of November through December. There is a high influx of tourists during the months of January, April, and May. Generally, people are least likely to visit in July. Every other year in March, “One Nation, One Culture” Festival is held. It showcases national unity as locals who were forced to relocate after the Genocide are reunited during the event. Another event to look forward to is HIGH FEST International Theater Festival held every October. Over 250 artists from about 30 countries join the celebration and collaborate. The festivity feature different forms of art, such as dances, dramatic theater, mime, puppetry, street performances, among others.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Tourists should visit Parque de la Vida, the biggest and the most important urban park in Armenia. It is also considered a nature reserve. Another must-see attraction is Bolivar Square, the main square of Bogota. It was called “Plaza Mayor” until the early 19th century. It has the capital city’s first public monument, the Simon Bolivar statue sculpted by Pietro Tenerani in 1846.
