Athens International Airport – ATH Athens
Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) is recognized as Greece’s biggest international airport. This major airport took its name after Eleftherios Venizelos, the country’s Prime Minister who played a huge role in Greek aviation. ATH-Athens ranks number 27 in the list of busiest airports in Europe. Located 12.5 miles from Athens, Greece, ATH is nestled in between several towns including Loutsa, Pata, Koropi, and Markopoulon Mesogaias.
Best Time to Visit
ATH-Athens officially opened in 2001, which became the central hub of Aegean Airlines including other minor local airlines. This airport was built to take over the Athens Ellinikon International Airport, which is now out of service. In 2018, ATH attended to a record high of 24.1 million flyers.
This airport has two terminals divided into the main and satellite terminal and are linked by an underground connection. Currently, there are plans to extend the airport with the objective of accommodating 50 million passengers in the future. Aside from Athens, the towns of Zografos, Papagou-Holargos, and Pallini also use this airport to fly in and out of Athens.

Airport hotels may not be easy to find in Athens but there are several accommodations near the airport. Sofitel Athens Airport is situated only for a minute walk from the main terminal.
Otherwise, visitors who prefer to stay outside the airport should consider Hotel Pantheon or Holiday Inn Athens Attica Airport West. Both hotels have good ratings and are popular among travelers. While ATH isn’t close to any other airports, the nearest is Mykonos Island National Airport (JMK) which is 159 km. from Athens.
