Beja Airport – BYJ Beja
Located 9 kilometers away from the city of Beja in the Alentejo Region, the Beja Airport, with airport code BYJ, of Portugal began as an airbase in 1964 and began catering to chartered flights in 2011. However, due to the small population of the city, passenger traffic is not as high as the government prefers it to be. Though there was improvement seen from 2017 to 2018, in which the airport handled 5,096 passengers.
Best Time to Visit
The Beja Airport (BYJ) was used as an area for weapons training until 1993. A civilian terminal was built in 2011 which marked the transition of the Beja Airport from an airbase into a military-civilian airport. Plans to turn the airport into an aircraft parking facility are being considered due to the low passenger traffic. Since its inauguration in 2011, the airport has catered to 7 flights, connecting this airport to 4 countries, including Germany and the United Kingdom. Towns that are nearby the airport include the civil parish of Torrão, the municipality of Grândola, and the small city of Sines, which is best known for its archeological sites.
