Civic Center, Guayaquil, Ecuador
The Civic Center in Guayaquil, Ecuador is also referred to as the Eloy Alfaro Theater. It sits in the southern section of the city, right inside the Forestal Park. The construction of the Civic Center was planned in the latter part of the 1960's during the administration of former President Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra. It was then a way of commemorating the sesquicentennial independence of the city. However, due to various circumstances, the construction was delayed until 1985. The Civic Center has a floor area of over 1.5 acres and features four stories. It also boasts of its main auditorium that can seat 1,927 people and two smaller theaters that can accommodate 150 people each. Today, the Civic Center is the frequent venue for plays, contests, exhibits, concerts, and civic events.
From the Civic Center, drive to the nearby campus of Santiago de Guayaquil Catholic University. This private Catholic school dates back to 1962, during which the only faculties were Social and Political Sciences, Jurisprudence, Mathematical Sciences, and Civil Engineering and Architecture. The Moorish Clock Tower in Guayaquil is also worth visiting as it serves as an iconic landmark in the city. It boasts of its contemporary design, featuring the works of the Italian architects from the early 20th century.
