Conakry, Guinea: A Port City of Delights
Conakry is the vibrant capital and largest city in Guinea, West Africa. A popular destination for its beaches, palm forests and water sports, Conakry also showcases an enormous mosque with an expansive botanical garden. The city underwent industrialization in the 1950s with the development of iron mining. Today, industries and enterprises like fruit canning, fish packing, and the manufacture of aluminum utensils and plastics contribute to the city’s growing economy. The airport serving the city is the Conakry International Airport (CKY).
Best Time to Visit
The city is best visited from November to December when it is at its greenest. Going during the hot month of April is not a good time because of extreme humidity. Most tourists arrive in October and November and this peak season means higher prices for Conakry, Guinea hotels. You can plan your trip to coincide with the largest musical event in the city, the Festival International Kora et Cordes de Conakry held on the first week of December.

Conakry brims with places to visit like the Conakry Grand Mosque, one of Sub-sahara’s largest mosques. Then head to Guinea National Museum for its display of traditional objects from different regions of Guinea and stop by the newly-renovated Guinea Palais du Peuple or Palace of the People. Stay at one of Conakry’s most famous hotels, the Hotel Palm Camayenne. Other good options are the upmarket Sheraton Grand Conakry and the Noom Hotel Conakry, a modern building with a view of the Atlantic Ocean.
