Corrientes: Argentina’s Carnival Capital
Corrientes, Argentina is the capital city of Corrientes. It is home to one of the country’s largest carnivals, dubbing it as the “National Capital of Carnival”. It was founded by Juan Torres de Vera y Aragón as “San Juan de Vera de las Siete Corrientes” in 1588. Some of the nearest airports to the city includes the Doctor Fernando Piragine Niveyro International Airport (CNQ) and Resistencia International Airport (RES).
Best Time to Visit
With a humid subtropical climate, the best time to visit Corrientes is during the months of April through October. The busiest months are usually January, May, and November. Tourists are least likely to visit in September. One of the most exciting events in the city is Carnaval de Corrientes, which is held every February. Dating back to as early as the 19th century, it did not begin on a large scale until the 1960s. It features costumes, parades, and street parties.

One of the most famous attractions nearby is Plaza 25 de Mayo in Rosario. It pays tribute to the date May 25, 1810 of the May Revolution. A monumental column symbolizing national freedom is located at the center, together with a statue symbolizing liberty. Surrounding it are statues of Manuel Belgrano, Jose de San Martin, Mariano Moreno, and Bernardino Rivadavia. Another interesting site to visit nearby is Casa de las Culturas in Resistencia, a cultural and exhibit center. Many Corrientes hotels offer promising hospitality along with their competitive rates.
