Cromwell, New Zealand is a town originally called “The Junction”, as it is at the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers. It was also called “The Point” and “Kawarau” before it took its current name, which was after Oliver Cromwell. The town is widely known as the Fruit Bowl of the South.

People compete in a unique contest, where the competitor who can spit a cherry stone the farthest is hailed as the New Zealand Cherry Stone Spitting Champion.
