Jacmel: A Haven for Haitian Art and Culture
Jacmel is a small commune in Sud-Est, a department located in the southern regions of Haiti. Its current name was derived from Yaquimel, the name given to in the traditional Taino language. Jacmel is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Jacmel, Haiti was the first town in the Caribbean to acquire electricity, earning it the moniker “City of Light”. It also goes by the names “Culture Capital” and “City of Artists” because of its thriving local art scene. One of the nearest airports to Jacmel is Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP).

The best time to visit Jacmel, Haiti is from December to April. This period presents the generally cool weather that both ends and greets the year. The best time to visit Jacmel for that avoiding peak tourist season is in February. Artists will have plenty to enjoy when visiting Jacmel, like the Jacmel Film Festival in December and the Jacmel Music Festival around January.

The National Pantheon Museum, outlines Haiti’s long history and rich culture. Incidents like the 2010 Haiti earthquake have emphasized the importance of institutions like this in preserving Haiti’s past. Another site to visit to learn more about Haitian art is the Museum of Haitian Art in Port-au-Prince, featuring art by many of Haiti’s local artists.
