Meru: Destination for Wildlife Viewing
Two hours away from Samburu Airport (UAS), you will find the fast-paced, sixth largest urban centre in Kenya, Meru, Kenya. It is nestled on the slopes of Mount Kenya and sits at the banks of Kathita River. The city thrives as an agricultural community and is surrounded by many forests and agricultural lands. Meru is also home to the country’s largest private university, Kenya Methodist University.
Best Time to Visit
Meru, Kenya is a year-round destination with distinct wet and dry seasons. It is during the middle of the year from months June to September most recommended to visit the city for outdoor recreational activities such as wildlife spotting. Otherwise, moderate to torrential rain showers are expected. But keep in mind that the summer is also the peak tourism season for the city and Meru hotels have expensive rates.

Three Steers Hotel is also a four-star Meru hotel and it boasts of its casino on the property. For somewhere budget-friendly, you can try Meru Paramount Hotel which has a restaurant and a bar/lounge. The Grande Hotel features bbq grills, a bar/lounge and laundry facilities. For those interested with history, the Meru Museum shows the culture, tradition, and heritage of the Meru people. An hour away, you can find the Nanyuki Park – just one of the natural parks in Kenya where you can see an abundance of flora and fauna. Another hour from there is the Sweetwaters Game Reserve where you can legally hunt wild animals.
