Sion Airport – SIR Sion
Nestled in the Swiss Alps, Sion Airport is a former civil-military facilitysituated about 1.55 miles southwest of Sion in Switzerland’s Rhone Valley. It was opened in 1935 when the Sion Council tasked the Valais Aero-Club with its operations. Sion Airport or SIR used to be one of the Swiss Air Force’s four jetfighter air bases along with Emmen, Payerne, and Meiringen, butis now dedicated solely for civilian use.
Best Time to Visit
The Sion Airport (SIR) has two runways: the asphalt 07R/25L measures 6,562 feet, while the 07L/25R with a grass surface is much shorter at1,820 feet. Because of its location, SIR lies close to some of the finest world-class ski resorts such as Zermatt, Nendaz, Verbier, Veysonnaz, Montreux, Saas-Fee, Gstaad, and Crans-Montana. It offers air taxi or passenger transfers by helicopter to major events like the Montreaux Jazz Festival and the WEF in Davos. Air Glaciers, Swiss International Air Lines, and Helvetic Airways offer seasonal and charter flights to St. Tropez, London, and Palma de Mallorca from Sion Airport.

It is six minutes from SIR by car, and just five minutes away by foot from Sion train station.
