Tilcara: A Lively Pre-Colonial Town
Tilcara, Argentina is a town nestled in the dramatic Quebrada de Humahuaca mountain valley and is called the liveliest little pre-colonial village in the area. A visit to town means driving through a spectacular landscape and imbibing a local artsy vibe that tells you it’s the archaeological capital of Argentina. The town’s full name is San Francisco de Tilcara and it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the country since human habitation in the area can be traced back to more than 10,000 years ago.
Best Time to Visit
Visit Tilcara in March to May for a weather that’s neither too hot nor too cold. The months of January, April and November are peak season to travel to Tilcara and expect to pay more for Tilcara hotel rooms. Tourist arrivals begin to thin out in July thus, this is one of the least expensive months to go to Tilcara. The Carnival of the Devil (Diablos Festivos) to celebrate Mother Earth takes place between late February and early March. If you’re planning a trip to town by then, make early bookings to save you heaps.

You never visit Tilcara without going to Pucara de Tilcara, a well-preserved pre-Inca fortifications and the main attraction of the town. Also a must-visit is the mountain valley of Quebrada de Humahuaca. Have a guided hiking tour of Waira Caves and be amazed by its stunning views and challenging trails. While in town, stay at Las Marias Hotel Boutique, a rustic-chic hotel near many attractions in town. Also good choices are the Posada Con Los Angeles and the cozy Refugio Del Pintor. These hotels are located just around 3 miles from the city center.
