Wattala: Colombo’s Busy Suburb
Wattala is a bustling suburb at the heart of Colombo city, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital. Located about 9 kilometers away from Colombo, Wattala has several mosques, temples and commercial establishments. A portion of the suburb contains a fisher folk area where some of the migrant workers’ families live. You can visit this place via the Bandaranaike International Airport, which is about 23 kilometers away from Wattala's city center.
Best Time to Visit
Locals celebrate Sri Lanka’s Independence Day in February through fireworks, parades and sporting events. In May, the people of Colombo gather around for the two-day Vesak Poya, which remembers the life of Buddha. In terms of the weather, the perfect timing to visit the city is during the dry season, which occurs from January to March. Wattala Sri Lanka hotels tend to be in demand during this time.
