Xanten: A Unique German Town with a Significant Historical Background
Xanten, Germany, a town with just around 28 square miles of land and 21,000 residents, is a rather popular tourist destination in the North Rhine-Westphalia state. In fact, Xanten typically accommodates around a million visitors annually. This is mainly because of the historical value of the area, being one of the early Roman settlements in the region.
Best Time to Visit
Every summer since 1993, Xanten hosts the Xantener Sommerfestspiele. This classical music festival typically lasts for two weeks and features numerous artists from across the country. However, the last installment of the festival was held in 2012. You can still enjoy the outdoors of the city when visiting in the summer season but expect expensive Xanten, Germany hotels and crowded city streets. The tourist population usually dies down by September during the fall season.
What to Do & Area Attractions
When visiting Xanten, three of its attractions are within walking distance away from each other. After exploring the Archaeological Park, the country’s biggest open-air archeological museum and perhaps the world’s only one of its kind, you can then drop by the Xanten Cathedral and Xanten Market Square. There are also plenty of hotels and accommodations surrounding these attractions that are conveniently within less than a half-hour walk away. Two of these, the Hotel Neumaier and Hotel an de Marspoort are roughly a mile away from the city center, as well. Both are also close to the Rhine River and Xantener Südsee.
