Praia: A Plateau Full of Charm and Gorgeous Scenery
In the southern coast of Santiago Island is the city of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. Much of the city center sits on a plateau overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the name Praia actually translates directly to “beach.” Within the charming city are old buildings in neoclassical architecture, cool surf spots, and thriving local markets and bars. Praia, Cape Verde is serviced by the Nelson Mandela International Airport, which is also known as the Praia International Airport. Praia, along with its suburbs, makes up the largest urban area in the country by far.
Best Time to Visit
With the mild desert climate of Praia, Cape Verde, most months in the city tend to feature warm, pleasant weather. Just make sure you miss the rainy season on August, with showers occurring occasionally across the city until October. November to June is widely believed to be the best time of the year to visit Praia.

Take a walk through the historic district, where you’ll spot several striking buildings, such as the Antiga Câmara Municipal, Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça, and Palácio da Presidência da República. Surf at various breaks in the city, such as Ponta Brava, Praia Negra, and Coragi. If you prefer a more relaxing beach experience, head to a local favorite, the Prianha Beach. Drop by the Museu Etnográfico, an ethnographic museum showcasing the traditions and customs of locals or tour the Estadio da Varzea.
